Agence France-Presse is one of the small number of international agencies which provide much of the world's general-interest news.
In this second half of the year 2009, the company's independence is threatened by plans for a French act of parliament which would turn it into a "national publicly-sector funded company", ending its current status as a commercial entity which is neither public nor private. This could very easily lead to a de-facto privatisation further down the road.
The ADIAFP was set up in May 2009 by a small group of AFP employees seeking to alert public opinion, both in France and around the world, to the dangers inherent in such a project.
Following the abrupt resignation of AFP's chief executive on February 24, the board of governors is due to choose a new CEO in early April
ADIAFP actively supports and promotes the petition "for the survival and independence of Agence France-Presse" which was launched by AFP's main trade unions at the end of 2008. We call on all our members and supporters to sign, and get other people to sign, the petition, which can be found online at http://www.sos-afp.org/
