Election of Staff Representatives to the AFP Board of Governors

Two ADIAFP members - Jacques Duvivier, a technician in AFP's Back Office service and the journalist Samir Douaihy - are among the candidates seeking to represent staff on the agency's board. Voting started on June 29 and is to run until Wednesday July 13, 2011

AFP's statutes provide for two staff representatives to sit on the board; one a journalist and the other a non-journalist.

An extract from Jacques Duvivier's electoral platform, which can be downloaded in three languages from this page:

"For many of you, these elections will mark the first time that you are being asked to vote for your staff representative on the AFP board of governors. The unjust nationality clause which previously excluded non-European staff from voting in these elections has been struck down by the French Constitutional Council.

"I am proud to have played an active part in the long legal battle which culminated in that ruling. All AFP staff, whatever their nationality, are now eligible to elect their representative to the board. Which means that this election now comes up to the standards we should expect from a worldwide news agency such as AFP.

"I hope that this democratic step forward will result in gains for local status staff around the world; I believe they should have the same rights as 'headquarters status' staff."
